The University of Limpopo Trust is a testament to the understanding that the next generation of South Africans will define the future of their country and their continent. The history of South Africa is painted boldly by the hands of giants, the men and women who fought oppression so that South Africa would belong to everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender or background. But in continuing this story, it becomes necessary to hand over the future to the country’s young people, men and women who still find themselves struggling to unlock the opportunities and promise of their country.
Throughout times of inequality, the two institutions represented by the Trust, the University of Limpopo and the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, held the distinction and honour of elevating the well-being and meeting the unmet needs of those of the margins of South African society, who would be otherwise locked out from the opportunity of education. Today, these institutions carry forward that legacy imbued with the spirit of excellence and with a mandate to embed all learning, research and programming within the needs of their communities. This makes the Trust essential not only to South Africa, but likewise sets the institutions apart as indispensable for the future of the continent.
