South African higher education is facing a funding crisis. Thousands of students who are seeking a brighter future through education deal with daily uncertainty around their ability to pay their fees and complete their studies.

Not only does this hurt the individuals who are unable to embrace a higher education, but it curtails the future growth of South Africa – a nation that sorely needs the contributions of qualified young black professionals entering the workforce and shaping our future.

The University of Limpopo, as an institution that delivers higher education almost exclusively to those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, constantly attempts to find funding for high-performing students from low-income homes.

However, we cannot do it alone. With the current funding crisis, the pot simply isn’t big enough to reward all deserving school leavers with the support that they so desperately need and deserve.

Not only that, but it is important that they enter their careers with a clean slate and the ability to earn an income, rather than being saddled with a debt that reduces their earnings over the years, when they have economic inroads to make, and in many instances, an extensive network of family members to support.

For this reason, one of the greatest gifts that can be given to an individual, a family and a nation is that of a bursary for an underprivileged and deserving student.

If you have the capacity to make a life-changing difference in the life of a student who has overcome vast structural odds to be where they are today – academically competent, but financially insecure – please step up and contribute to our bursary programme. We are calling on private individuals, companies or civil organisations to do what they can to alleviate the financial hardship of deserving students.
